Austria | | |
Sunny weather blessed the Austria resorts this weekend. The sun has been shining at every resort we report on and with low temperatures the snow is in excellent condition.
All 48 of the lifts at Mayrhofen (10/140cm) are open on Monday. Fine sunny weather is forecast for the rest of the week but it will be very cold so wrap up warm. No new snow is forecast this week but the snow isn't likely to melt due to the cold conditions.
The same is also true for St Anton (50/140cm). All of the Arlberg's 85 lifts are running, taking skiers and boarders to the top of the excellent slopes. All the links the other resorts are open. More sunny weather is forecast for the week ahead, but a few flakes of snow could fall on Tuesday.
Neiderau (50/90cm) has 24 of its total 27 lifts running on Monday. Light snow is forecast for Tuesday, but it should only amount to 1cm maximum. This will help to freshen up the pistes, even though they are already in excellent conditions thanks to the cold weather.
|
France | | |
Courchevel (55/79cm) is being blessed with glorious sunshine on Monday. The whole of the Three Valleys ski area is open and conditions are generally very good. Cold temperatures are helping keep the snow firm and dry. Light snow is forecast for Courchevel on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. 8cm is likely to fall on Tuesday and a further 4cm on Wednesday. This should help freshen up the pistes a lot.
Over at La Plagne (70/110cm) and Les Arcs (90/135cm) conditions are very good. The best conditions can be found at La Plagne, where 25cm of fresh snow fell on New Year's Day. Cold temperatures have meant that the powder is still in good condition and there is still plenty of it left if you know where to look. La Plagne is also forecast 12cm of snow in the next five days.
Vars (140/200cm) is forecast the most snow in France for the coming week. 20cm is expected to have fallen by Wednesday.
|
Switzerland
| | |
The sun continues to shine in Switzerland on Monday. The good news is that although it has been very sunny, it has also been very cold so the snow hasn't been melting or getting soft.
The 2 metre base at St Moritz (80/200cm) means all the rocks are covered, both on and off the pistes. The whole ski area is open on Monday and snow is forecast for Tuesday when up to 8cm could fall. The temperature should remain low until the end of the week when a slightly warmer period is expected.
Engelberg (59/123cm) currently has all 25 of its lifts running. Clear skies dominate and the temperature is low, providing perfect ski weather. Dustings of snow are expected in the next two days, but shouldn't amount to any more than 3cm.
|
Italy | | |
Italy is also sitting under clear blue skies on Monday. Sunny weather has won through for the past four days, but Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be snowy days.
Macugnaga (100/250cm) is looking to be the snowiest resort in Italy this week, with 23cm of snow expected to land by Wednesday night. 14cm of this is expected to fall on Tuesday. The temperature is set to remain low until the end of the week, so the snow should fall as light powder.
Sauze d'Oulx (180/220cm), in the Milky Way ski area is enjoying sunny skies on Monday. The base depth is excellent and is more than double that which they would normally expect at this time of the season. Snow is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday with a total of 19cm expected in the next five days.
|
Andorra
| | |
The sun has been shining in Andorra over the weekend and it continues to shine on Monday. It hasn't snowed yet in 2009 but snow is forecast this week.
Soldeu (70/170cm) is bathed in sunshine on Monday morning. All of the lifts are running and every piste is open. Cold weather means the snow is in fairly good condition so the skiing is excellent. Light snow is forecast for Tuesday then during the middle of the week it should be cold. Snow is also forecast next week.

Norway / Sweden
| | |
It is cold in Norway on Monday and fresh snow fell over the weekend at Oppdal (70/90cm), Trysil (47/68cm) and Voss (40/65cm). 15cm of new snow landed at Oppdal and Voss on Saturday, while Trysil reported a light dusting of snow falling on Sunday.
Changeable weather this week could bring a light dusting of snow to most of the Norwegian resorts while heavier snowfalls are expected at Oppdal and Voss.
Fresh snowfalls hit Åre (40/54cm) in Sweden this weekend and the upper piste depth has increased by over 10cm. Sälen (40/50cm) has unfortunately not reported any new snow on Monday morning but a light dusting could arrive this week. Heavier snowfalls are forecast at Åre.
|
| Germany
| | |
No fresh snow has fallen at our reported German resorts over the weekend but the cold temperatures are keeping the snow in good condition.
Garmisch Partenkirchen (10/200cm) is reporting the deepest snow base of our featured German resorts, followed by Oberstdorf (30/140cm) and Reit im Winkl (20/120cm).
There is a chance of some snow following on Tuesday, although this will only be a dusting if it does materialise. The end of the week is forecast to be dry and sunny but it should remain cold.
|
| Bulgaria
| | |
Great news for the Bulgarian resorts as heavy snowfalls this weekend have improved the base depth at all three of our reported resorts. The snow cover on the pistes is a mixture of packed and groomed fresh snow although there is plenty of soft snow to ski if you want it.
Bansko (80/105cm) now reports the deepest base depth with over a metre of snow on the upper pistes, closely followed by Borovets (55/100cm).
The snow conditions at Pamporovo (60/90cm) have also really improved due to the fresh snow that fell over the weekend.
The weather this week is forecast to be mostly sunny although it will be cold, so wrap up warm to get the most out of your days skiing.

Scotland
| | |
Snow has fallen in Scotland over the weekend, and the mountains now look a lot whiter. This has improved the cover at all of the resorts but Glencoe and the Nevis Range are still closed as more snow is needed for snowsports.
The Ptarmigan Bowl and Ciste Fairway at Cairngorm (15/20cm) are open with fresh, wind drifted snow and the patrol is assessing the situation in other areas. Today, Monday the resort is offering snowsports at 1960's prices – which means you can get skiing for £1. This does not cover all services, so do check with the resort.
The good news is that Glenshee (15cm) still has a good cover of snow on Claybokie thanks to a combination of fresh snowfalls and manmade snow. There is also snow on the plastic slope on Monday and the lift is open for that too.
At The Lecht (10/20cm) Robin and Wren are open for beginners on Monday while Eagle and Grouse are open in the main area.
Changeable weather is forecast this week across the Scottish resorts and this could deliver further light snowfalls.
|
USA | | |
Lots of snow has been falling in the US over the weekend. Jackson Hole (150/191cm) is having an excellent start to the season. Nearly five and a half metres of snow has fallen on the resort already this season and the weather forecast shows no sign of the snow stopping. 57cm is forecast to fall this week and each day looks like receiving about 15cm. The avalanche risk at Jackson Hole remains very high so take extreme care everywhere on the mountain.
Alta (191cm) in Utah got hit by another storm over the weekend. The resort lived up to its cult status amongst powder skiers when 35cm of fresh snow fell on Saturday. Six of the resorts seven lifts are running on Monday and the links over to Snowbird (185cm) are all open.
Taos (216cm) in New Mexico received 33cm on Sunday. Fantastic skiing in knee deep powder was reported and some places were up to thigh deep. All 13 of the resorts lifts are running on Monday.
The east coast of America has experienced a warm spell of weather, which brought light rain with it to some places. Attitash (140/152cm) got a little bit of rain but this didn't damage their snow conditions at all. Temperatures soon returned to normal and snow started falling. Nine of their 12 lifts are running on Monday.
|
Canada | | |
After the recent cold and dry weather in western Canada, a series of weather fronts bringing heavy snow are now moving in.
Whistler (120cm) has 67cm of snow predicted in the five day forecast and temperatures are expected to remain fairly low, although the snow could fall as rain in the village. Nearly a metre of snow has fallen at Whistler over the last week, so the conditions are constantly improving. 25 of their 38 lifts are running on Monday.
Lots of snow is also forecast for Revelstoke (142cm). The resort known for its massive snowfalls is expecting 75cm in the next five days which should make for some great powder skiing. Light winds should mean the snow falls evenly and doesn't blow into wind slabs.
The east coast of Canada is also fairly cold and snow is expected at both Tremblant (66cm) and Mont Sainte Anne (142cm) in the coming week. Tremblant received 5cm of snow on 3 January which helped freshen up their pistes. 21cm of snow is forecast on Wednesday and with a temperature of -12ºC, the snow should be of excellent condition.

| European Weather Outlook
| | |
The weather in Europe this week is generally expected to be cold and dry. Wednesday to Saturday is expected to be the driest part of the week and temperatures could rise a little.
Vars in France is expecting 20cm of snow to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday. This is the most snow forecast of the French resorts that we report on. The rest of France is also expecting snow but only from 10 to 50cm.
In Austria it should be largely dry and cold for the whole week. Most resorts are not expecting any snow at all this week, but temperatures are expected to remain way below freezing so the snow shouldn't suffer. It might get slightly warmer at the end of the week, but still below freezing.
Oppdal in Norway is expected to be the snowiest resort in Europe this week. 42cm is forecast for this week. 20cm of this is expected to fall on Tuesday and the temperature should be well to the preferable side of zero.
|
| North American Weather Outlook
| | |
Snow is forecast on and off across America throughout the whole week. The recent cold spell in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming has gone and milder weather has moved in behind it.
Copper Mountain in Colorado is forecast to receive 10cm in the next five days which will help freshen up the pistes when it falls. The rest of Colorado is expecting roughly the same amount of snow as Copper, but the 10cm should be spread throughout the week.
Jackson Hole in Wyoming currently has the most snow forecast in the US. 57cm is expected to land by the end of the week and it should remain quite cold. The first half of the week is when the bulk of the snow should fall and the end of the week is looking colder and slightly drier.
Sunday River and Smugglers Notch are expecting heavy snow this week. After their recent mild spell of weather 40cm is expected to fall in the next five days. Fortunately for both resorts the temperature should remain well below freezing, so any rain is unlikely.
Canada is expecting more snow then the US, especially in British Columbia. Revelstoke should see 75cm fall by the end of the week, giving them more fantastic powder. The best powder day should be Wednesday, as 25cm is expected to fall on Tuesday night. Whistler is not far behind in terms of snow forecast, with 67cm due in the next five days. As is typical with Whistler, it could fall as rain down in the town but anywhere above that will see large quantities of snow fall.
